Requirements

In order to be eligible for the Green Card Lottery you must fulfill 2 requirements:

1. You must have been born in an eligible country.*

All countries are eligible except for the following:

Canada
China
Colombia
Dominican Republic
El Salvador
Great Britain
Haiti
India
Jamaica
Mexico
Pakistan
Philippines
Russia
South Korea
Vietnam

*If you were born in an ineligible country you may still enter if your spouse was born in an eligible country or if one of your parents was born in an eligible country. You may claim one of these countries as your country of eligibility.

2. You must have a high school or equivalent education or have worked for 2 years in an occupation within the past 5 years that requires at least 2 years of training or experience to perform.

Any applicant who can’t meet these 2 basic requirements should not apply. Please check your eligibility before applying.

There is no minimum age to apply, but the education/training requirements effectively stop most people under the age of 18 from participating. You can enter regardless of where you are living, even in the United States.

You do not have to speak or write English.
You do not need to have relatives living in the United States.
You do not need a particular amount of money or a job waiting.

You only need to qualify as an immigrant, which means that you cannot be a criminal, cannot be mentally disturbed, must be able to work or support yourself, and cannot be a threat to the national interest.

Through the Diversity Visa Lottery, commonly referred to as the Green Card Lottery or DV Lottery, you may attain United States permanent residence status. A person who has permanent residence status in the United States has the right to live and work in the US without restriction. This right may last for a lifetime, or it can be ended in some circumstances by an uninterrupted absence from the United States of more than a year or two.

Permanent residents are said to have immigrant status in the United States, in contrast to foreign nationals who are here temporarily in nonimmigrant status, such as F-1 students, J-1 scholars or H-1 temporary workers. The Diversity Visa Lottery, for many, is a means to obtaining permanent residence status in the United States. By submitting an entry to the Green Card Lottery (DV Lottery) you give yourself a chance at obtaining a green card through random selection.

Though the Diversity Visa Lottery may provide a green card, permanent residence is not the same as citizenship. Permanent residents of the United States remain nationals of their home country. They do not hold US passports and they do not owe allegiance to the United States. They may not vote in elections and they may not hold elective office. After a certain period of physical presence in the United States (typically 5 years, sometimes 3 years), permanent residents can apply for United States citizenship if they choose, but it is not necessary to become a citizen to retain the right of permanent residence granted through the Green Card Lottery.
