If you receive a visa through the Diversity Visa Lottery Program, commonly referred to as the Green Card Lottery or DV Lottery, you will be authorized to live and work permanently in the United States. You will also be allowed to bring your spouse and any unmarried children under the age of 21 to the United States.

The State Department holds the Diversity Visa Lottery every year, and randomly selects applicants from all qualified DV Lottery entries. Because it is likely that some of the first 50,000 persons who are selected will not qualify for diversity visas or pursue their cases to visa issuance, more than 50,000 entries are selected to ensure that all of the available diversity visas are issued. However, this also means that there will not be a sufficient number of visas for all those who are initially selected through the Green Card Lottery.

Once 50,000 are issued or the fiscal year ends, the lottery is closed. Therefore, selected applicants who wish to receive visas must be prepared to act promptly on their cases.
